I saw on a website (don't have the url at hand) a paper detailing where recording professionals were evaluating with a configurable 24 bit codec and DSP engine the effects on the sound of different sampling rates and aliasing filter transition characteristics using analog material sourced from an Ampex ATR102. They were consistently detecting specific effects on imaging and subjective spectral balance, as I recall with sampling rates out to at least 256Ks/s and with FIR and IIR filters having cutoffs as high as 100khz.

I would like to 'see' SEJ's comment about recording 24 bits and playing back at 16 bits being 'enough' for accurate sound and raise him a byte on each. Of course, that doesn't address sampling rate, jitter, monotonicity, etc.
