Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Maybe it goes back to an industry that does not care about quality. Or maybe didn't know their asses from their eardrums

I just got finished playing some of the highly touted sonically (at the time) CBS Mastersound pressing of the digitally recorded and half speed mastered 'Weather Report' by Weather Report.

In reality, the highs in this recording were much softer than most of my analog recordings. What really was notable was the complete absence of low level detail past a certain point. For instance, on 'Volcano for Hire', the percussion noises (for that's all they really were) were too disjointed to give any visceral impression of an actual drum kit being performed upon. The playing of the tambourine was excessively hard to follow as an identifiable instrument. The bass guitar sound was gutless and frankly wasn't identifiable as a stringed instrument. Nothing at all in the recording was placed in any sort of sound stage context, because it all had been removed by the digital recording process.

In summary, a pathetic unacceptable digital recording. It's hard to account for the supposed competency of those whose fawning accolades for the CBS digital recording process were highlighted on the album sleeve and insert.
