...the way it works.

it sounds like there is no cost to "get in line". however, when it looks like your tonearm will actually be built, then you make a deposit. the tonearms (at least the reference) are customized to the customers specs (choce of wood for the arm; modified for the intended cartridge)...so... at that stage it *could* be harder for frank to sell YOUR choices to, say ME.

the 50% at start of building + 50% on delivery makes sense to me.

i think they don't ask for a deposit at the time the order is placed because (a) someone else will be there to step in in case you flake on the order and (b) they don't REALLY know if your tonearm will ever be produced.

at least that is a responsible way to go aobut it, instead of grabbing all the cash up-front as some people might do it. it's not a money thing...it's more an issue of a one-man shop and his health.
