Hi Rebecca,I think a lot of audiophiles get upset at the mere mention of Bose is due to the fact that they are very popular with the mass public, which incidently, consists of non-audiophiles or non-critical listeners and in regard to that, for SOME non-critical listeners (and even some audiophiles) they may be just right for CASUAL faire (I bet even the harshest food critics will take-out from a fast food restaurant every now and then).
This is why they are tops in the mass market. They do not seem to be totally offensive and if you do no more than listen casually and/or you haven't heard anything else why should "Joe (or Josephine) Stereo" care? You go for what you know.
I haven't listened to them in years, but my opinion (nearly 30 years back) was that the 901s (their flagship at the time) was passable, but nothing I would be interested in...
They tended to make orchestral works very involving when set up properly but they tended to make solo instruments (e.g., guitar, piano, violin, etc) sound EXTREMELY bloated in size.
Basic qualities (frequency response, audible distortion, etc) were better than some at the time and worse than a number of other speakers in their price range.
I have no idea about their modern ilk today except in brief and they were ok as far as I'm concerned, but would I rush out buy some?
Don't think so.
Then again, when it comes down to the short of it, if Bose strikes that magic note (so to speak) for you, then go for it.
Just don't let this be the END of your auditioning for speakers... you may find something that may be better for you in the long run (and check other good audio sites for education).
Bottom line is you go with what will bring you the most satisfaction for the dollar you spend.
Good Luck,
DeeCee
