Well I don;t think you are ever going to get 20 times better when paying 20 times as much - in anything let alone speakers. I don;t believe you can measure sound quality in "times better" scenarios. I do not have a problem with anyone on these boards choosing to spend 20times more money on 1% better -- if that 1% is the difference between musical satisfaction versus anoyance then it may very well be worth the money. If we summed everything down to "it's not really better" then capitalism would crumble. A 25 year old honda will get you around and so will a Ferarri so if the rich don;t have toys they can buy into then gee they would have to be pursuing those high paying careers in an altruistic fashion rather than for money and power. And while the Star Trek vision (Leninist, Dickensian view) may be lovely in theory, my faith inhuman nature equals that of trusting a virus to decide not to spread.
I don't think people knock Bose because of where he comes from. He played the American capitalism system and plays on people who buy fads rather than quality -- judging by the music industry Amar nailed it. He put out technical babble that looks absolutely terrific on paper and then puts out a rather weak product. Harman International learned from Bose very very well -- get some big name lab coats on the bankroll to lend credibility (just like the great Amar of MIT) and then dole out white papers and then put out weak products at high prices.
Heck isn't that guy from Monster Cable a Nuclear physicist? I'm sure he has a bunch of techno babble as to why his cable is more important than upgrading your speakers. For an insane amount of money you can buy some sort of power bar that "conditions" the line. I think the rhyme is more apt in "conditions the mind."
I defend Bose because for the price they really are not that outlandish -- hardly the "evil empire" of the audio world. IMO east coast sound speakers which glut the market are the ones to be far more worried about. They had me for awhile way back --- I shudder at my old ignorance - though many would say I have found a new ignorance - c'est la vie.
