Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Bose: informed opinions and commentary wanted

I have heard the 901's in several different settings, and, while not at all accurate at reproducing the full frequency spectrum (Rebecca, read: all the high frequencies and all the bass), they do produce a pleasant sound. They also consume gobs of power. If you can obtain a cheap amplifier with lots of quality power (watts, expressed with the letters RMS after the number), and you have a large room to afford freedom of placement of the speakers, the 901's might not be bad, if you must have Bose.

Avoid like poison any of the satellite/subwoofer systems, which consist of two teenie weenie speakers that mount to the wall or must be placed on stands, along with a single larger unit that sits on the floor. These are the speakers that are truly awful in every respect, and no amount of power or fiddling will improve them. You must simply take this as a matter of faith, based on our collective experience and lack of interest in selling high profit margin junk. Do NOT let a saleman persuade you that Bose (or any other brand) is good because it's popular, expensive, or selected by Consumer Reports. Use Consumer Reports to buy a washing machine, not speakers.

In order to compare what different speakers--Bose and others, old and new--sound like and be able to make your own decision, you should attend a free concert at which acoustic instruments are played without any sort of amplification. Go to a local coffee house or any college campus music department and listen to what the music there sounds like, even if you don't like the music itself. Then buy or borrow a pair of the best headphones you can find (NOT the earbud kind of junk, but real, over-the-ear headphones that sell for at least $100, but better toward $300) and listen to your stereo through them so you know if your system is really any good. The music through the headphones should sound a LOT like what you heard live. If it doesn't, then whatever speakers you attach to your system aren't going to sound good, either.

Good luck, and don't forget to enjoy yourself and report your progress to us.

Peace,
Tom E
