Bose to the audiophile community is in approximately the same position as Exxon-Mobile is to environmental activists, or WalMart to labour. a necessary boogieman. Bose are an incredibly successful company, who are an 800-lb. gorilla amongst pygmies (in the marketing sense). It annoys the "faithfull" that this company sells so much gear to Joe Public, who therefore must have cloth ears. Meanwhile, cult gear like SETs, old-school turntables, funny-looking DIY speakers etc. are ignored. The real reason, I suspect, for all the teeth-grinding amongst audiophiles is the increasingly minority status of 'philes in today's fast-paced, instant/disposable society. iPods, cheapo home theatre, MP3/compressed audio, etc.; most of these things are anathema to the true audiophile. Bose rakes in the dough from sales to this huge market.I don't think Bose products are always all that horrible, really; a pal of mine who was really hard-up bought a used system for peanuts that featured, among other things, a pair of Bose 301's of 90's(?) vintage; they actually sounded pretty good, compared to some of the shrill "audiophile" speakers that are marketed at that pricepoint; actually warm (and yes, a little fuzzy). Amazing too, is the fact that they seem to have the same paper drivers that they had in the 70's!
