Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

My view has change a little bit with Bose...

It used to be that Bose was WAY overpriced for what you got and that is still evident but then reading the other responses you have received I would say that 90% of speaker makers have seen the Bose marketing and are copying it and sell equally bad (though different bad) speakers.

B&W, has a speaker line in the 700 series which gets great reviews and are popular - they advertise in every issue of every magazine (often twine in the same issue). They are FAR more expensive than what Bose is selling and in a number of ways nowhere near as good. B&W is Bose for audiophiles -- and B&W's direct competitors may as well fall in line here as well.

Sure B&W makes some very good sounding speakers that I would take over Bose -- Nevertheless -- marketing drivel, big spectacle adverts, a sound that is merely mediocre for the money, and sellers who push push push B&W, seems awfully similar to me. The difference is largely in perception.

I do not care for the 901 but at least it has a virtu in design and if the indirect radiating pattern does not put you off they are fine. They are fine for clubs as well to get sound everywhere in the room. And they tend not to have the serious issue of sounding bright and etchy like a lot of supposedly high end speakers do. I think the 901 goes for about $1100.00Cad these days. There is a lot of abysmal garbage at $1100.00 so the Bose falls in line nicely. The 705 is $2300.00 and I well I can't help thinking of Bose.
