Although, you can run with this idea and be fairly enthusiastic about it, like the baroqu and classical periods, or you can be coy and more sophisticated, like romantic and modern.
But everyone who hears any kind of music and remembers it later, does so by humming or at least, singing in their head. And that is analogous to thinking of a sentence of phrase of words in at least some respects. And the idea of call and response, for lyrics and music, has been around since before humans were strictly humans: 50,000 years at least.
