Great point, thanks. Now, you had me all the way until the end, when my "birdbrain" instincts kicked in? Why do WE (humans) think we "own the rights to music"? "That's wy bird song isn't music" cannot only be put forth as fact if the bird's aren't "consciously organizaing the sound", which we cannot know for sure. Actually, I think we do...birds have patterns that serve purpose. It is perhaps not "human music", but that's a whole 'nother can of worms (birds on the brain) in that "human music" is an ever-shifting form. Yesterday's "noise" is today's "music", but ask a bird and he'll say "human crap"!:-)What is apparent is that Modern Classical and Jazz compositions are taking more chances than ever with the use of non-traditional sounds and effects, and that the "vocal basis" of instrumental playing is opened up to question as a result. I'm thinking James Carter here, and his (artistic, musical IMO) "physical attacks on his horn" as being a good example. Can music ever be truly "spontaneous"? Can music come to be WITHOUT systematic human direction? Why not?
