Whenever I brought some difficult, spiky, bleep-and-blap kind of music to my lesson, my teacher told me to "play everything legato and sing it like Sinatra" for a while.That gets the often-disjointed melody in your head, and that makes it much easier to play it short and spiky again. For you must be able to hear the tune (no matter how weird) before you can play it.
