"Maybe one of the weaknesses of modern classical music is its lack of connection to singing?"I think it is hard to generalize about modern classical music. There are some features of modern classical, like atonality, that can make the translation into song. But I understand what you are pointing to and tend to agree with you. I think the reason it takes people longer to find the music in modern music is the fact that it does not seem to derive from those qualities that they normally associate with song.
We hear melody in voices from the time we are babies. The natural way for adults to communicate with babies involves patterns and voice inflections of song. And melody (and singing) is integral to culture. The lack of melody, the atonality and dissonance of modern music, is harder for most people to connect with. And I know I will get flamed for saying it, but I believe modern music is initially approached intellectually, whereas melodic music is initially approached emotionally.
I don't know that this is a "weakness," but it is certainly a difference.
The idea I'm turning around in my head, though, has to do with the kinds of patterns that appear in modern music. These patterns make the music more accessible, because they provide an ordering to the sounds that the mind can grasp, sort and interpret.
The kind of patterns that I personally found rather interesting in this way have turned out to be phrasings that, to me, seem akin to speech patterns. The way people talk. I find that I connect to music that uses this kind of phrasing on an emotional level, rather than just intellectual, even though it lacks melody.
This is not the only aspect of modern music that I can enjoy. But it is just a connection that I found in some modern music that occurred to me. I'm just trying to understand it a little better.
