Composing music is the highest form of creative mentation. One takes a problem (say, a theme) and manages it to a conclusion, along the way introducing arguments and evidence and sidebars and such just as one would in a literary essay. Only, music has to make sense on many more levels than mere words. This is exactly why Bach and Beethoven are widely regarded as the greatest, and we have the motto
THINK LIKE BEETHOVEN!
