Brian,Yeah, don't get overexcited about a FET's transconductance (gfs). The gfs is proportional to the drain current (Id).
No 2 device types will sound the same. I think we have to be satisfied with good transparancy.
Assuming sonic performance is satisfactory, the reasons for FETs are simplicity and reliability. A 1 KOhm Carbon comp. stopper takes care of parasitic oscillation. Heater to cathode potential limits are a non-issue. LITTLE head scratching is required to set an enhancement FET up. DC couple the gate to the prior stage. Ignore the minimal internal resistance and use Ohm's Law to compute the load resistor value.
I like FETs. IMO, we have just begun to understand the construction of superior performing tube/FET hybrid topologies.
