Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

A lateral thought...

...As Naz has said, I propose a complex but effectively sonically transparent "Super Linear" cathode follower. This is the 3 triode output section of the line stage here.

But if you like doing things in KISS mode - take a look at the schematic of the phono section. This phono section can be used stand alone if your input impedance of the line stage is exactly and consistantly 50k, AND if you include the capacitance of the interconnect as part of the 3n3 cap in the second half of the RIAA. Then it can drive most any amount of cable with zero losses.

For example, if your i/c measures 300pF, then just use a 3n0 cap rather than a 3n3 and you'd be vey close, or if 1000pF then use 2.3nF of capacitance. And then no CF of any type!

But realise that you will alter the RIAA eq if you swop your i/c's around...

A good description of the whole circuit can found as a download from the link below - and you are invited to build the whole preamp DIY if you want. I've recently sold two of the production version (known as SVP-1) to owners of Audio Reserch Reference units - one a Ref 2 and one a Ref 3 - so it more than works!

Regards, Allen
