Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

Most here will tell you to avoid CF ...

and I'm not about to argue except to say that they sound OK with a CCS in the tail or better still according to Allen Wright, with CCS and VS on top. The advantage being that CF offers low OP impedance to drive long interconnects. However if you can avoid the long ICs then there is little capacitance to drive and IMO you are better served with a standard grounded cathode stage using your favourite low rp tube (mine is a 6H30P), or better still a grounded cathode with a CCS load.

I need to drive 6m long ICs and found that (contrary to my belief) it was not necessary to chase an exceedingly low OP impedance ... especially to the detriment of all else. After testing many configurations I settled on a tube loaded (quasi CCS) grounded cathode stage.

I know many here prefer OP traffos but in my experience it takes top quality and generally very expensive units to match the air and extension of my preference ... though I concede traffos can add a degree of warmth and body if that's what you prefer or is what your system needs.

My 5 cents worth.

Cheers,
Naz
