phono preamp: can I eliminate the cathode follower?

Hey guys,

I'm deciding between various schematics for photo preamps.

Almost all of them have a cathode follower as the final stage. I like th idea of three stage so I can do the RIAA in 2 step, but is the cathode follower really the way to go?

So many people are down on the CF saying its slow and muddy. I mean, isn't slow the last thing I need in a phono pre?

I don't mind building an integrated amp if necessary to reduce the need to drive interconnects. There must be a good and simple solution. Or not?

Thanks to all, Dale.
