Re: Stellavox or nagra may be better

I used a Stellavox SP-7, and it was a great machine. It's quirky, though, with the bottom plate and rubber bands to drive 7" or larger reels. It may or may not be a step up from the B77 sonically; but certainly not in the maintenance area, which you are concerned about. I'd suggest sticking with the Studer/Revox product lines, such as an A80 or an A800, which unfortunately are the size of your kitchen stove, but are killer machines and repair is readily available. Alternatively, there may be a small step up in the Studer line equivalent of the Revox line. But at all costs, avoid the old Revox A700. It's a dog. Otari made some good machines as well, but I'd be willing to argue about whether or not they're better than Studer/Revox. Bottom line: there are few choices to step up from a B77 unless you go to a big-time studio machine.
