none of the big companies that made large pro and consumer r2r machines, spent any time optimizing for sound quality - on the pro side it was mostly for reliability and operational quality. In stock form any big Studer or Otari sounds just ok - fortunatley there are experts such as Tim d.P. who know how to extract the most out of those machines... THEN they sound like they are supposed to, truly showing off the quality of analog tape recording.
