Even the NAAC from DRAGOn is not without problem in adjusting the playback/record azimuth correctly. When a tape is dropped into the cassette well and you press PLAY, the NAAC will start working to try to adjust the azimuth of the head. However, if the adjustment cannot be optimized for that tape, the NAAC will still stop after 10 to 15 seconds. So in the real world, one still do not know exactly whether the azimuth has been adjusted correctly for that tape. Of course, having something is still better than nothing !!The DRAGONs was manufacutured all the way to the middle 80's. So it is still a 20 years old machine. I do not know what is your standard on "MINT". From my experience, I seldom see a DRAGON sells for below a $1000 that really functions as specification. How many times you see a DRAGON for sale that comes with recent service receipts for less than $1000?
Ask Jeff Gatlin of ESL how much does it cost to overhaul a DRAGON.
I own several DRAGONs ( early, middle and late version ) so I am not a DRAGON SLAYER.
