Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

Get a Dragon. It's a no-brainer.

> The appeal of the...Dragon is auto-reverse...

The automatic head azimuth alignment of the Dragon is far more important than any other feature or spec. It was Nakamichi's technological tour-de-force and there's never been another like it. It's still considered the best playback deck ever made and is used by professional tape restoration services.

Head azimuth is the single most critical factor in playing back tapes made on other decks. No two tape decks are aligned exactly the same. The greater the difference, the more the sound quality is affected. Reel to reel enthusiasts routinely align their tape heads because the controls are accessible, but this not true of cassette decks.

I got my Dragon on eBay and chose it by inquiring about its history before I bid on it. Because they're extremely complex machines, Dragons need service now and then so I recommend looking for one that's been serviced recently.

Some Nakamichi cognoscenti believe that there are 2-3 other Nak decks that record marginally better than the Dragon and cost more (the CR-7A may be one of them) but none that play back better.

BTW, Nakamichi used a narrower head gap than any other manufacturer of cassette decks. For this reason, tapes recorded on a Nak never sound as good on another brand of deck. The reverse, however, is not true. Naks can play back anything.

> Will a Nak's playback of these tapes be much better than that of a unit which is designed for HX PRO?

Yes. HX-Pro was a recording technology, not a codec like Dolby A, B, C, or SR.
