The NAAC system of the DRAGON will stop adjustment of the playback azimuth after around 10 to 15 seconds no matter whether the software has find a solution or not. So after it stops doing adjustment, you still do not know whether the azimuth of the playback head has find an optimal angle related to that particular tape or it just decide to quit. This means that it might not be any better than before adjustment ( there is no way to tell ). The only way to find it out is by your golden ears if your pair qualify. Mine don't.
A deck that is seldom use does not mean that it is better than the one that has been constantly used. Just like a car. If a car parks in a garage for a very long time I don't think that it is better than a car that has been constantly running. It can be even worst! Remember the most important part of a cassette deck is its transport system and most of the parts inside a transport system are mechanical parts. Lubrication will dry out with time and the motor will freeze if not being used frequently. The electrolytic capacitors will short if not constantly charged.According to what I understand, ESL will replace a lot of parts for you even if they are still in working condition. Easily a service bill from ESL on a DRAGON can be close to $1000. That is what I saw on the service bills of several DRAGONs that suppose to be still in running condition. ESL claims that that is the only way in order to provide you with a two years' warranty after the service. You decide whether this worth it or not.
If I have the money I don't mind to pay ESL to perform the service as there is no question that ESL is the most qualified place to service and maintain the DRAGON IMHO.
