All of my Nak 550 tapes are encoded so I don't have a choice. If I could go back in time, I'd record with the Dolby off just because it's so hard to calibrate a deck to match a tape that's almost 30 years old. There's one thing to know about using Dolby B or C encoding on a Nak tape deck. Dolby encoding requires proper tape saturation to work correctly. If the record levels are too high, the encoding can actually degrade sound quality, making the results sound dull. It's very tempting to oversaturate when recording on a Nak tape deck because they have so much headroom. You can get away with much more oversaturation than other decks. But if you see that the peaks are pinning the meters, you can be sure that you're reducing the effectiveness of the Dolby circuitry and possibly even distorting it.
