Some feel that audible distortion products are produced due to non-linear characteristics of the dielectric. These distortion products are believed to occur when the charge across the dielectric changes polarity (as would occur each time the audio signal reverses polarity). The battery pre-charges the capacitance of the cable with a DC voltage that is greater then the peak excursions of the audio signal so that the polarity of the charge in the dielectric is constant even with the audio present.I was just reading some posts on another board which discuss some recently published capacitor tests in Electronics World by Cyril Bateman which supposedly actually show an INCREASE in distortion when a capacitor is DC biased, even when the DC bias is greater than the signal level.
