No serious IC manufacturer these days would consider gold. My inclusion was a reference to the "golden age" [sorry about that, I couldn't help myself] of transistor engineering.Gold is a nasty contaminant in fabrication lines. Clean room operators in most facilities are forbidden to wear gold jewelry (or makeup). Once it gets into diffusion furnaces it is difficult to remove. The main problem it causes in most IC facilities is excessive leakage current. Of course, in linear applications, the leakage current appears as 'popcorn' noise because of the randomness of the carrier transitions.
