This is not unique to transistors. Many power tubes will also exhibit such behavior - some more than others. With some tubes signal induced modulation is extremely pronounced. In their case the increase in the internal power dissipation increases the cathode temperature, with corresponding steep increase in emission - hence Gm, etc.Some tubes are even prone to thermal runaways, much like the transistors.
