I have a copy of that patent and had a long look at it. For a power amp, this appears to be not much of an issue considering the high voltage across VCE and the high impedance load a diff amp drives. Also if the gain is high the "real" amplification is done at the class A driver in the next stage. I can see the use of this application, or something like it in a low gain higher voltage application.
