Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Excellent responses from all!

I have to offer my appreciation for all the ideas here. As simple as I might have wanted it, it's not as simple a solution as I thought. The Zen amp, as mentioned, shows quite a complexity increase in later revs that the supposed simplest transistor amp took on which made improvements. A simple buffer amp of low power has a lot of things to try, and maybe that digital amp is best.

I did find a JFET that has 50 mA Idss and that could allow for a modest amount of paralleling. Capacitance is a real problem for my situation, as most power MOSFETs have. I did find a medium power lateral MOSFET designed for RF that might work, too, with much less input capacitance.

I looked up the Sziklai pair and that offers a host of possible pair combinations that look interesting. The interesting thing about the Sziklai pair is that the output transistor is operated common source (or common emitter), not source follower, which ought to have great impact on the way it sounds (and of course the way it distorts).

I'll see what I can do. I'm in no hurry with it, so don't hold your breath for the results.
