I think that a follower WILL generate higher order distortion, because the load in a source follower is effectively the same thing as a degenerated source resistor of the same value in a common source. However, it may be such a small amount that it is effectively negligible. This might be a good project for 'spice' simulation. I could probably measure it with my set up, but a simulation might be easier.
