This is an interesting discussion. There should be a significant difference between a cathode follower and a triode common cathode stage, yet the distortion could be comparable in some cases. The mechanism for linearizing a triode is the change in plate resistance with current, which will tend to cancel the Charles Law rise in transconductance that is normal in tubes.
Any follower, tube, fet, or transistor, will follow the voltage drop of the load. This is different enough to be interesting.
