Re: micing a kickdrum with a Shure SM58?

143.236.5.172

Each instrument and vocal occupies a specific bandwidth primarly

A piano
A vocal
A bass guitar
A snare
A kickdrum

Mic anyone above and run it through an FFT
You will see the primary freq bandwidth these all use

Typically in a small club a snare drum will stand out and come
through the vocal mics..

The toms and Kick will get lost in the stage volume
If the band has a stage volume of 110db then there isnt much
to work with in a club system now is there?

To put it bluntly an SM57 is a piece of crap mic to use for a kick drum period
Why? The dam diaphragm is the size of a nickel in diameter

Try a large diaphragm mic for the kick
Heck even a cardiod condensor mic, or a condenser would work better with the mic location Bill described then a SM57
Keep in mind the possible feedback problems you can get with
a condenser (PZM mic) (non cardiod pattern)
If you use a PZM (pressure zone mic) you can get some impressive
results on drums if you can keep it from feeding back through your system
This is a cheap alternative to running mics on the entire kit.
