The diaphragm size means little, what matters with the 57 is that it is only good down to 50 Hz or so-BY DESIGN. It's supposed to be that way.For kick response to 30 Hz is desired, and while it's easier to get there with a larger diaphragm than a small one it's not a sheer necessity.
My laboratory grade mic is flat to 10 Hz and does so with a 1/4" diaphragm. Of course, it's a condensor mic, not a dynamic, and for that matter so is the PZM, which helps explain why the PZM goes lower than a 57. This also helps show why blanket statements on the necessity of certain physical characteristics aren't always useful.
