Without the midrange you don't have music, you have mud. Try listening to a sub only, no mains- all you hear is indistinct thuds. Listen to the mains with no sub- the musicality remains. If it comes down to a choice of having either no bottom end or no midrange then bag the bottom end, and with drums the midrange is the snare.As for DJs it's a personal pet peeve of mine as a bass player that there's no surer way to ruin good music, or even bad music for that matter, than using subs as weapons of mass detruction.
