I agrre that the bootm is a necessity- I am a bassplayer, after all. I think your experience tells the tale, that for music to sound good all the elements have to be judiciously combined. Problems arise when bozos with big subs and no taste crank up the bottom at the expense of everything else. In the 25 odd concerts I've monitored so far this season perhaps 10% of the soundmen got it right, and these are guys who supposedly are the cream of the crop. Invariably I've found the best mixers are those who work in the studio as well as live, or are themselves bassplayers and thus know how the instrument is supposed to sound.
