While I disagree strongly w/ Bill's statement that "it's snare that drives the beat. Kick is secondary", I will endorse his recommendation for nestling the mic somewhere under the rack tom/above the kick/pointing at the snare. SM58 has a wacky off-axis coloration but this will pick up enough Thud from the kick drum shell to "drive the beat" emphatically and in a decent balance with the crisper on-axis pickup of the snare.
