Re: micing a kickdrum with a Shure SM58?

That's a tough one. About all you want to try not putting through the PA is the bass;it will carry without reinforcement. Everything else needs to be in there to get a decent mix. As for the drums the snare is key; without being in the PA it will be buried.

I have a 4 piece R&B group and even in small rooms run four vocal mics, two guitars and one drum mic- seven channels. In big rooms two more drum mics and bass make it ten channels for four pieces. For a single gig you'll survive, but if this gets to be a steady thing 16 channels is a must.
