Re: Joel, regarding your dead SCD777ES...

Allen,

Thanks for your note and suggestion for my SCD-777ES and its frustrated owner.

Actually, Robert Tracy, the tech who's been trying to fix my 777ES, spent an hour on the phone will Bill Thalman (who kindly refused my offer to pay his regular shop rate for his time). However, Robert told me afterwards that Bill could not offer any approaches or suggestions that he had not already tried.

The final suggestion, which also came from Richard Kern, the tech who installed your Level 1 output stage on my machine, was to the effect that "you'll have to replace the main audio board and maybe the RF board, too." This is apparently about $1200 in parts, on top of the original cost of the machine, plus all I've spent for the new spindle and sled motors and the new laser, and the PartsConnexion component upgrades. $1200-1400 also seems to be approximately what a complete, fully functional SCD-777ES seems to be going for on Audiogon (last time I looked). Robert Tracy kept saying that it was insane to have to replace the entire board when the problem was almost certainly a single failed component or faulty connection--which, admittedly, he's been unable to identify.

Nevertheless, I do recognize that Bill Thalman consulting on the phone is not the same as Bill having the machine on his bench in his own shop. Till now I've baulked at shipping the unit, since it's so heavy and I don't have the original boxes, and the first time it was shipped it was damaged. But at this point it's probably the only alternative to junking it or selling it to someone like you : - ).

The last time I spoke to Robert (early August), he was still waiting for a new RF board from Sony Japan via Sony Canada. I expect I'll have to wait until he's received that. And if it's not a go then, I'll probably take up your suggestion and have him ship it to Bill Thalman (not without Bill's permission of course!).

Thank you very much for giving me hope!

Regards,

Joel Tatelman
