I really enjoyed the quality of my SCD-777ES with the Level 1 VSE upgrade (though I didn't like the lowish output). But then the machine stopped reading discs (no fault of VSE). I've had the laser, sled motor and spindle motor replaced and it's still in the shop, after more than a year, waiting for a RF board and maybe a new audio board. My tech has had phone conversations with two or three of North America's top SACD modders, and no one seems to be able to help.
I've since migrated to an older Teac VRDS with a Benchmark DAC and am pretty happy. In fact, I'm thinking of upgrading the transport and DAC. I'd like to do a side-by-side comparison with Redbook CDs (since my collection remains 99+% CDs), but I suspect that, in the end, it will simply not be worth it to fix the 777ES. Too bad, it had great potential.
Happy listening all.
Joel.
