I have the level 5 mod on a 777ES and use a Placette passive preamp and I have dynamics galore---and my speakers are the very inefficient Apogee ribbons that simply suck up current like an alcoholic guzzling bourbon (BTW: my beverage of choice is Basil Hayden, but I don't think I'm a guzzler, yet.). If you use an active preamp, the lower output from the VSE mod, IMHO, is definitely a non-issue. In every case that I've experienced with friends with active preamps, they turn down the volume when using a CDP. If you have any doubts, I would call VSE.Again, IMHO, the VSE level 5 mod is simply stunning---I will not pretend to know anything about what the SOTA in digital sounds like, but the music the VSE level 5 mod produces via my 777ES continues to bring a smile to my face each and every time I play it---and please note that my primary medium is vinyl.
Lacking in dynamics?? Not in my system. Of course, YMMV. Now, if you'll excuse me, my glass is empty.
