Re: 8 track cartridge vs SACD

no, it wasn't the Wollensak, it was a Japanese deck not sold in the US.

and your memory of 8 track technology is possibly missing a few chapters. Much of the innovation that went into cassettes also saw the light of day in 8 track (and some of them came first to 8 track, and was later adopted by cassette). chromium dioxide, yep we had them. bias and equalization settings? yep. plus the wider gap spacing in the head allows much better frequency response. 30kHz was definitely achievable, even Nakamichi proved that 20kHz was achievable on the cassette (albeit, with the right tape, and the right phase of the moon, and if you squint your eyes hard enough).

i think many of these innovations were only available in the Japanese/Asian market.

We also had a true quadraphonic 8 track deck - 8 track was a viable format for quad, as long as the album length was less than 45 minutes. My Dad was really into quad, we had a Shibata stylus and CD-4 decoder (for discrete Quad reproduction on a turntable), plus both SQ and QS matrix decoders (from Sony and Sansui respectively).
