My Dad had a "high end" 8 track cartridge deck in the 70s - that thing sounded really good!The advantage of 3 3/4 ips tape speed is that you get frequency response all the way up to 30kHz without the ultrasonic noise of SACD.
A good tape like BASF will also sound good - I made many recordings from LP to 8 track and they always sounded excellent.
Main issue is the "klunk" sound whenever the deck changes tracks, and the need to workaround the short loop time (around 15-22 mins)
