There was one room I recall at CES that had a sign indicating that they were playing CD only - and I'm pretty sure they did not have a SACD player. I can't recall the exhibitors, but I do recall that the sound was pretty good. I think they were trying to say that they could get good sound from CDs - and what's wrong with that.There were a couple of rooms using the Reimyo CD player, and they sounded great - the Reimyo is wonderful. $15k. It does not play SACDs.
Close to the very best sound at the show, in my opinion, was the Zanden room. No SACDs are played on that unit, and my God it sounded fabulous. I would not mind the combination - but that's $40k.
So I think that most notmal CD players can't match SACD sound, especially modified SACD players. But there are some CD machines that really push the envelope.
The problem is - they cost a fortune.
