Re: I have, as well as others tried VERY HARD to drain music from CD.

I hear what you're saying Teresa but I'll be darned if I can hear DRAMATIC differences and believe me, I wish I could. I, like so many here, profess to be a music lover and that's what fuels my passion. That is absolutely true. I attend a lot of live shows, mostly jazz or fusion, but at the live performance the visual aspect is at least 50% of the experience. The live sound, in my opinion, is not as plesing as what I have in my listening room, yes even on the lowly CD. Let's face it, when you go and hear a band you will be listening to amplified music and very poorly amplified I might add. Even moderately clean systems can reproduce better sound that what you hear live. Then there's the allure of all that exotic gear.

I won't be selling my CD collection any time soon. I now own a player that is capable of what I consider very good sonics with the 44.1 format. Compare that to what I listened to in 1982 (the original CDP-101 Sony which I sill have packed away in its original packaging) and there IS no comparison. It was like fingernails on a blackboard. The new players get a lot more music off many of the old discs (forget about stinkers like Abraxas or other very early transfers). I like SACD; in fact I am just about ready to spend about $3000 on a new player, chump change for some on the board for a small fortune for us fixed-income folks.

Lastly, I read your reply above where you gave a blow by blow of front end purchases over the past 13? years. My goodness, it is amazing the effort and cost you have put into your personal search for the sonic golden fleece. Now I know you are a music lover but be honest. Don't you find yourself mesmerized by the sirens call of those incredibly beautiful pieces of gear on the pages of Stereophile? If so, would you be willing to try and explain all this to my wife?

Happy listening back at you.
