They don't normally "add" to the sound but rather bring that which is there through to the listener with as little coloration as possible. This seems to be in direct conflict with the above statement. Personally, I rather like Marty's writings. Of course I don't always agree with him but I think he tries to be reasonably honest and I doubt he is in it for the glory or money. In fact, I would dare say he does it for the love of it as he is not likely making a living off the rag. I think he still has to stay active in his law practice to put bread on the table.
Finally, if he just wanted to use the rag as an excuse to get access to equipment I would think it would be much easer to simply write for a larger rag such as TAS or SPhile.
