OK, I won't argue with your experience, although what connection you see between OPTs for SE 300B and OPTs for PP 6550/KT88 I can't imagine. The requirements are vastly different, it's much more difficult to produce a good SE OPT and just because a manufacturer's products don't suit SE doesn't mean that they won't suit PP. If you wanted to extend the list of good (PP) OPT brands beyond what Jeff has already mentioned, you could also include Edcor, Bartolucci, Plitron/Amplimo, James, Lundahl and Sowter.
I don't think many people would argue with the premise that an amp is only as good as its OPT allows it to be. A poor choice of OPT means an inferior result that no amount of circuit design can remedy. However, an excellent OPT in a poor circuit won't sound good either, and that was what I understood Jeff's point to be.
