Hello Mr. Jeeves:Many years ago I asked David Hafler about primary impedances and why the ST70 had a nominal pri impedance of 4300 ohms CT while the RCA manual recommended 6600 ohms CT.
David told me (this from the best of my memory of a long ago conversation) that... with pentodes the lower primary impedances did increase second order distortion--- but he said, who cares, since it is largely wiped out by the push pull action--- but the real benefit of "lower than book" pri impedance was a dimunition of the third harmonic which he said went down quite a bit vis-a-vis using a higher pri impedance.
