so not much for me to add. I will say I don't feel there should be any big difference in performance between a 6K and a 4K3 OPT. I run a pair of 10K hammonds, without any feedback, and have a -3dB point around 80khz (only 3 watts). Now a 20K OPT rated at a 100 watts would be a challenge indeed! So I guess I am saying, in the case of Curly Wood, that if I can go to 6K and UL operation, and still get the desired wattage, but have 1/3rd the THD and better ability to deal with a changing load, then I have gained more than I have lost by moving to the higher impedance OPT.
I don't know if this helps and I don't know your setup. You mention no global feedback so I assume triode operation. In that case I'd look for the best operating point for my tubes with the lowest THD and hope for the best (might by 4 times the Rp but it could be 6 times). Triodes are rather tolerate. Pentodes are rather critical and it makes me wonder why they are used in class AB for difficult loads! I guess it is assumed that enough global feedback will cure all ills.
