Mike from Magnequest, who in my experience makes superb transformers, had an interesting comment the other day (on this forum) with regards to this question. He said that it was better to get the best transformer that came close to matching than to get the best impedance match. He thought that a well impedance matched but otherwise lousy transformer was a waste of money. I agree, I have found that a good transformer makes a good amp. Mediocre transformers are simply unsalvageable: non-linear or no bass transformers cannot be fixed IMO.
