Saves wear and tear on the speakers. And, when done right, saves wear and tear on future speakers, too. They tend to hate oscillations, 100V 60Hz sinewaves, and offsets approacing the rail voltage. Tweeters hate clipping even more.Mainly it saves a LOT of time. For example, I used to build speakers by ear. I'd be lucky to get a two-way right in 6 months of diddling. My favorite 4-ways took me two years before I was happy. Nowadays, with all the cool test gear (FFT and the like), I can get the design 90% of the way there in a week or two, then let my ears do the fine tuning. That's 5-1/2 extra months of music enjoyment instead of breathing solder fumes and listening to "Jazz at the Pawnshop" three thousand times in a row.
