Who cares about guidelines. Everyone hears a little differently. If I had to listen to middle-eastern music for the rest of my life I'd kill myself. Now a stereo with monster cables would not bring me to suicide; it would just bug me. You on the other hand may prefer monster cable. See where guidelines become moot? There's too much room for subjectivity.

I have to say SE is making more sense to me lately. Unlike him though I have and still make recommendations based on my observations and experiments (not scientific mind you) with a handful of cable brands. Over the past 10 years I've come to my own conclusions. I believe I hear minor differences in cables. Non-audio friends have confirmed or denied my observations with cables I've given to them. (since they would never buy them)

I feel we just don't know enough about audio to have all of the answers. I think we know a lot. But there's too much money involved and too much bickering for there ever to be a consensus.
